Projects

Association for Practical and Professional Ethics

The Association for Practical and Professional Ethics is committed to encouraging high quality interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching in practical and professional ethics by educators and practitioners who appreciate the theoretical and practical impacts of their subjects. The Poynter Center is the host for this international membership organization.

Ethics Bowl

Each year the Poynter Center sponsors an Ethics Bowl team of five undergraduates who compete in the regional competition in Indianapolis.

Ethical Guidance for Pervasive and Autonomous Information Technology (PAIT)

The Ethical Guidance for Research and Application of Pervasive and Autonomous Information Technology (PAIT) Workshop, held March 3-4, 2010 in Cincinnati, Ohio, was made possible by the National Science Foundation (grant number SES-0848097), Indiana University's Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions and the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics. The workshop followed a year-long process of planning, case development and analysis, and networking among information technology engineers and researchers, ethicists, and other interested persons.

Healthcare Ethics Seminars

The Poynter Center invites six to eight speakers during the academic year to address ethical concerns of community health care providers. Discussion participants include faculty members, students, local physicians and nurses, and center staff.

Neuroethics: Ethical and Social Implications of Neuroscience

Neuroethics is a new area of scholarly activity, looking at ethical and social issues raised by the research and clinical applications of new technologies that deliver increasingly detailed information about brains and their activities. Brian Schrag, the executive director of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics, and Colin Allen, from the Cognitive Science Program and the History and Philosophy of Science Department at IU, received a New Frontiers in Arts and Humanities grant from the IU Office of the Vice Provost for Research to explore the ethics issues raised by the new research in neuroscience. The grant provided funding for speakers for half-day workshops in 2009-10.

Poynter Center Roundtables

The Poynter Center hosts a series to highlight creative work and research by IU Bloomington faculty in ethics and democratic life and culture.

Research Prizes for Undergraduates

Each year the Poynter Center offers $200 prizes to selected students who are doing research in practical ethics.

Sims Lecture

The Matthew Vandivier Sims Memorial Lectures were created to foster discussion in one of two areas: issues in responsible communication between patients, families, professional care givers, and counselors; or issues in biomedical ethics. The series, which was established in honor of Matthew Vandivier Sims, who died in infancy, is a collaboration between the Matthew Vandivier Sims Memorial Lecture Fund and the Poynter Center.

Teaching Research Ethics

Each year Indiana University and the sponsors listed above offer the Teaching Research Ethics Workshop (TRE) to provide training for those involved in teaching research ethics or in administering research programs. The workshop emphasizes a variety of pedagogical approaches to teaching research ethics, through sessions on ethical theory, research ethics, trainee and authorship issues, assessment and evaluation, responsible data management, integrity in research, conflict of interest, and international research. The 2012 workshop will be May 15-18 (Tuesday - Friday).

Virtuous Empathy

Indiana University received a grant from the University of Chicago (sponsored by the John Templeton Foundation) to study "Virtuous Empathy: Scientific and Humanistic Investigations" from fall 2010 to spring 2012. Richard B. Miller, Poynter Center director, is the PI for the project. Additional support is provided by the IU Institute for Advanced Studies, directed by John Bodnar, the IU Office for the Vice Provost for Research, and the College of Arts and Sciences. The Poynter Center will host a symposium November 11-12 on campus.
